An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Dragonfly
Mondays have become my favorite day of the week because of my art class in daily painting. Today we counted the amount of brushstrokes it took to paint a simple object. The first time it took 155 strokes, then we had to do it in 25 strokes and then we were allowed to finish our paintings as we saw fit. I found the class challenging but learned that I spent too much time making sure the dragonfly was accurate rather than creating beautiful strokes of color. I finished the painting with dabs of color rather than scientific micro line work, so I guess I learned something :-)

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Plein Air Painting in Lyme, CT
My husband and I spent a very beautiful and productive day on the land of the Pleasant Valley Preserve, part of the Lyme Land Conservation Trust. About thirty artists participated in today's "Lyme's Beauty Paint Out." We both completed two paintings each, while our new Parson Russell terrier, Polly, got used to the sometimes grueling day of the plein air painter. She did great and we are all quite wiped out!

Spring Vines
Today's Project...
It was a very busy day of cleaning the studio after my son and his friends built a bridge out of uncooked spaghetti (it held 1600 lbs before breaking in the high school competition today.) Next, 30 boards were gessoed for my daily paintings. I then created a gold leaf sample molding for a home on the East Side, learned how to paint on a PVC pipe to disguise it on a historic building front (use auto body primer,) and created two color samples for a cute kitchen in Smithfield. The client will need to choose between the floral borders below... or send me back to the drawing board!

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
A Bird's Nest in Three Timed Sessions
This afternoon was my painting class with Kelley MacDonald and today's exercise was to do the same composition starting with 60 minutes, then 40 minutes and then 10 minutes. The point is to capture what is essential and not overwork the painting. I ran out of time for the last one before I was happy with the painting, but the 40 minute session was a winner. Great fun with a great group of folks at the art club. I am eyeing a hibiscus for tomorrow's session...

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...

This is the first time I have ever painted my youngest son, and I have painted very few portraits in general. Some parts are right, others could be tweaked, but not a bad first attempt. This painting was more of an example of the joy in the process then the final result. I was able to gaze upon the him as a young man, and not have it be awkward. It was a great experience.

A View for a Princess
Completed for a five year old's new bedroom, this princess window included a sparkling tiara. Her initial was designed into the faux stained glass, and the color selections matched her Pottery Barn bedspread perfectly. It is a great example how a room can be transformed with even just a little space available.

Two Tulips
Thanks to my aunt's taste for fresh flowers, I was able to grab some great shots of these tulips. The background was originally a bright violet, but I toned it down to push the flowers forward. This painting took about an hour and a half to finish.

Boston Red Sox Inspired Room
The Boston Red Sox Inspired Room
As I was backing up my hard drive last week I noticed several fun projects I never posted to my blog, so in an effort of spring cleaning, here is a room I completed with a Fenway Scoreboard, Yawkey Way vintage styled sign and a Red Sox Hall of Fame bookshelf. The boy's initial was painted in the theme as well.
The boy's little brother also got some new sports themed artwork to match a toy shelf. Four 12 inch square canvases were mounted to a larger board for strong visual impact.

Angelic Clouds
Today's Project...
It was a 10 hour day but so worth it to create four very loved grandchildren on a dining room ceiling in a home in North Smithfield. I am headed to bed with a heating pad on my neck but a great sense of satisfaction that the client was so happy.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Beach Roses and Bee
Today started out so beautifully. I attended my class at the Providence Art Club and began this painting, done from a photograph I had taken at the Cape last summer. How quickly the mood became somber and I found it very difficult to concentrate as we waited for news from Boston. I brought the painting home to rework it, with a little more success, yet I realized painting for me is a very emotional connection with an image, and my emotions were long gone from the easel after 3pm today.
God bless those who hurt tonight.

Lilies for the second time
I had a very full weekend, enjoying Daffodil Days in Bristol on Saturday and cleaning my flower beds all day Sunday. It took two days to get this one finished, about 4 hours total, just because I was enjoying the process. I wish you all a lovely week.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Spring Bouquet
Getting back in the swing of things wasn't too easy. The studies went quickly but I went back to my old ways of glazing the life out of the 6x6 painting, so 40 minutes into it I started just dabbing the color on in shapes with a large brush and brought the life back. Looking forward to more flower studies this week.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Where I have been this past week...
The last time I posted, I was about to celebrate my birthday, and then my son's Confirmation, and what I didn't know was I was about to hit hit hard with the flu! Well all is back to normal and I am posting some projects that I finished up in the crazy week I survived. Back to daily posting today! Have a beautiful weekend.
Swedish Fish daily painting
An imaginative landscape based on a photo of a small brook (it was a special request by my sister.)
Some artistic repair work in a 1920's home in Providence after a water leak flooded 3 floors of the home. The sandstone mantle is decorative and suffering from years of neglect by the prior owners. I patched the cracks with a textured product and then painted it to appear as mortar. The plaster ceiling vaults have been patched and touched up no less than 5 times over the years, so my job was to seal the baking soda consistency of the damaged areas and blend the old touch ups.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Smarties!
I had no idea those little ovals would be so hard to get right! And to add insult to injury, my sister thought it would be funny to tell me that she ate my still life while I was taking a break!!! I am happy to wrap this one up, as it took almost two hours to complete. I am now in search of a fast candy to paint tomorrow. My computer is going into the shop for the weekend, so I will post my new work on Monday. Stay tuned and have a joyous weekend.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
Peppermint Love. I figured I would stick with candy this week, and I liked painting the cellophane highlights yesterday, so I dug these out of the back of the pantry closet. The sketches took about an hour and the 5 x 7 acrylic took close to two hours, only because I was challenged (frustrated) by the overlap of the cellophane. Now I am moving on to painting some Christmas tree artwork for my licensing work tonight.

An Adventure in Daily Painting
Today's Project...
As I celebrate my birthday this Friday, I decided I wanted to mark my 45th year with some artistic endeavor. Coincidently, Kelley MacDonald was offering a class entitled "The Merits and Pleasure of Daily Painting" at the Providence Art Club. The practice is to do a small painting every day. It is a time to try new subjects, materials and techniques while working on color, composition and speed. The goal is to complete the painting in about an hour. Today was the first class. The sketches were completed in 10 minutes each (very humbling) and the finished 5x7 was done in an hour. I am hooked! So I will do my best to post each day's image as I embark on this new year of my life. Happy Spring!!!
